Western slot-machine makers will need new strategies to win the jackpot in Macau, according to Scott Winzeler, Asia division managing director for International Game Technology.

The Nevada-based IGT, a dominant supplier of slot machines in the United States, sent Winzeler to run the new Asia division. He was previously in charge of Japanese and international markets operations.

The division, which opened its headquarters in Macau this month, will get about 70 percent of its revenue from the SAR, predicted Winzeler. IGT now holds around 30 percent of Macau's rapidly expanding market.

After becoming the first bookmaker to accept wagers on the box office success of "Star Wars: Episode III," PinnacleSports.com has seen bettors backing the film to set new box office standards, while having the most successful opening in history.

Although PinnacleSports.com originally opened betting with "Revenge of the Sith" as a 6/1 long shot to break the three-day opening weekend box office record of $114.84 million held by Spider-Man, a surprising 80% of all bets placed to date have backed the film passing the wall-crawling crime-fighter. As a result, the odds on "Episode III" breaking the three-day box office record have been slashed to 11/5.

Video slot machines: Bells and Whistles

24.jpg

The short answer is that it doesn’t matter. Beer bottles, glasses, shots (bullets or one-ounce glasses full of rotgut whiskey), buzzers, dancing icons, Betty Boop dolls, Wheels of Fortune, Dick Tracy, Monopoly boards, I Love Lucy, or The Munsters—none of this matters at all. It makes no difference whether the machines use real wheels that spin, or a computer screen where icons scroll by.

None of these gizmos make any difference at all. Once you’ve got the computer chip in place, there is no limit on what kind of bells and whistles can be created to enhance your playing experience. There’s even a series of slots based on Saturday Night Live including the Church Lady, the Coneheads, and Hans und Franz!

What is a slot machine?

23.jpg

The Florida Legislature has a tough riddle on its hands: What is a slot machine? Many slot players already know the answer from personal experience: It's a device which takes more of a gambler's money than it returns.

That's a real-life definition. But law-makers deal in legal jargon, which sometimes deviates from real life.

Florida doesn't permit true slot machines -- legally defined as machines that use a internal random method to determine what winning symbols will appear on the pay line of the device.

Toward legalizing online gambling

22.jpg

Undeterred by murky federal law and emboldened by a trade ruling, at least three states are edging toward legalizing online gambling, and Great Britain is on the verge of permitting its land-based casinos to take bets online from U.S. citizens.

Those are the latest assault on the federal Wire Act of 1961, which bans use of telephones to place sports bets. U.S. lawmakers have struggled for a decade to update the law, hoping to restrain the fast-growing, $10 billion-a-year Internet gambling industry.

Cartoon slots machines

What do Betty Boop, Blondie, Popeye, Rocky the Flying Squirrel, Bullwinkle J. Moose, Mr. Magoo, and Felix the Cat have in common?
For just about anyone who grew up during the 1960s, these names conjure up images of Saturday morning, sitting in front of a television with four or five channels, eating Sugar Pops or Sugar Crisps or Sugar-anything-else cereal and laughing hysterically at cartoons. And these were cartoons crafted with a mastery of offbeat comedy that was undeniably better than anything our kids will find on the scores of cable channels available to them here in the 21st century.

No smoke alowed

Barhs Landing has seen a number of cultural shifts in its 88-year history, and the restaurant-marina in Highlands on the Monmouth County bayshore is comfortable with the next one: going entirely smoke free.

But there is one issue owner Raymond Cosgrove wants to raise in that regard. If lawmakers plan to make restaurants and bars go smoke-free, then they should include Atlantic City casinos, he says.
